v1.9 september 20 06 data sheet ag1170 +5v / +3. 3 v low power ringing slic 2.0 line interfacing as well a s being u s e d in an ele c tri c ally demandi ng environ ment, the need s of di fferent application s and regul atory st anda rd s m e ans that the slic m u st be flexible, and have facilit ies to ensure robust perfo rman ce. the ag117 0 slic provi des a com p l e te and flexible in terface to the telepho ne lin e. 2.1 batter y feed the ag11 70 has a n integ r al dc/ dc co nverter, which gene rate s the battery voltage in the device. this mean s that only a sup p ly of +5v o r 3.3v is n eed ed, unlike conve n tional sli c s which will also ne ed a battery volta ge of anythi ng b e twe en -20v and -60v (-7 5v for ringi ng). thi s co nfers a signifi cant co st, spa c e and time to market benefit on the equi p m ent desi gne r. the batte ry feed to the t e leph one lin e is ge ne rat ed from the po sitive supply rail. this provides a -48 v battery feed to the line driver, whi c h is adj ust ed automatically to match line con d ition s . powe r efficie n cy is goo d, becau se the line is su ppli ed with o n ly as much po we r as i s n eed ed . little exce ss heat is gen erated, even on sho r t line s . t he loo p curre n t is pre - set to a consta nt 24ma, unde r the conditio n s sho w n in s e ction 9.3 of this data s h eet, whi c h spe c ifie s the ?dc ele c trical cha r a c t e risti cs? fo r the ag1170. 2.2 ringing the ringi ng signal i s gene rated by swit chin g the slic into ringin g mode, by setting the rm pin high, and the n toggling the f/r pin at t he re qui red freque ncy a n d cad e n c e. the toggling of the f/r pin pro d u c e s a balan ce d sig nal at tip and ri ng. these sig nal waveforms a r e sh own in figure 4. rin g ing voltage of approximatel y 65vrm s i s applie d to a single h and set . it is imp o rtant that the rm pin i s o n ly set hi gh d u ri ng ringin g and that this pin is set low at all other time s. applicatio ns note a n 11 70 -14 provide s advice on ho w to implement this req u irem ent. duri ng ring ing the i n tegral dc/dc convert e r automatically switch es to prod uce a ba ttery voltage of -72v. thi s will produce greater than 40vrm s into a ren of 3. the slope of the edg es on the ringin g waveform is s e t internally to give the c o rrec t waveform with 20 hz to 25hz rin g ing freque ncy. whe n an ?off-hoo k? con d ition o c curs du ring rin g ing, th e ring -trip circui t on the ag1 170 sen s e s the loop cu rre nt flowing a nd signal s the off-hoo k conditi on on the s h k output. the shk sign al must be ?de - boun ce d? (by the controlling processor) for 10m s to rem o ve any spuri ous pulses. t he dc/ dc co ntroller limit s th e po we r. th e ag1170 will operate continuou sly with a ring -trip lo a d . the ring -trip functio n wi ll ope rate u p to a l o o p resi stan ce of typically 800 r (in c lu ding t e leph one ). it is also g u a r ante ed not give a false rin g tri p with a loa d of 3 ren. 2.3 pow e r dow n and sy nchroni sation the dc/dc converte r can be switched off by applying a logic 0 to the pd input . the slic take s 50m s to power up fro m this po we red d o wn stat e. logi c outp u ts are not valid duri ng thi s t i me. wh en u s ing the power down functio n , it is re co mmend ed th at the slic is polled (p owered u p pe rio d ically) to che c k for shk (th e sub s crib er h a s go ne off-hoo k). if not in powe r do wn mode, the p d pin sho u ld be left open circuit. an op en- colle ctor gat e shoul d be used fo r a pplying th e pd sign al. nev e r conne ct a logic high to th e pd p i n. note: thi s i s a se nsitive node; kee p conne ction s v e ry s h ort. the dc/ dc has an i n ternal oscillator. if desi r ed, t he oscillator fre quen cy may be synchro n ise d with an external clo c k fo r emi re aso n s. to do this, a 12 8khz (+5v ) or 64 khz (+3.3v ) square wave (with 5 0 :50 m a rk spa c e ) shou ld be inputt ed to the pd pin. se e applicatio ns note: an11 7 0 -12, for fu rth e r detail s . 3.0 the 2-4 wire (h y b rid) conversion. the ag11 70 slic tran smits and re ceives bal an ced 2-wi re a nalog signal s at the tip and ri ng co nne ctio ns. these are co nverted to a grou nd refere nce d output at v ou t a nd from a groun d ref e ren c e d input at v in . the v ou t an d v in pins a r e no rmally con n e c ted to a cod e c fo r conversion of audio to a n d from a dig i tal pulse code modulate d (p cm) stre am. 3.1 transmit and receive gain. the gain i n both the tra n smit dire cti on (tip/ri n g to v ou t ) a nd the receive di re ction (v in to tip/ring) is s e t t o 0db. norma lly any gai n adju s tments requi re d by t he use r ca n be made by prog rammin g the cod e c. 3.2 the 2 wire impedance. the 2 wire i m peda nce at tip/ring of th e ag1 170 is set to 600r. it re quire s no ext e rnal p r o g ra mming re si stors. the 2 wi re impedan ce of the ag 1170 -p ca n be prog ram m ed to the req u ired value by con n e c ting comp one nts across pin s z t 1-zt 2. the imp eda n c e ratio for z t is 10 0. re sistors shoul d be multiplied by the ratio and capa citor val ues divid ed b y the ratio to obtain the re quire d prog ramming valu es. e.g. for 600 r impe dan ce, fit 60k resi stor (ne a rest value = 62k ). furthe r d e tails on th e p r og rammin g of th e ag117 0p are contai ned within applicatio ns note: an1 170-1. ? silver tele com 20 06 6
